CASE STUDY - RENTAL DESIGN
This project shows how thoughtful interior design can improve the atmosphere of a rental space without requiring major investment.
By working with existing elements and introducing flexible furniture solutions, the design creates a calm and cohesive bedroom while respecting the practical realities of rental living.
Location: Belgium
Type: Rental apartment – bedroom
Collaboration: Online interior design
Scope: Interior concept proposal
Goal: Improve the atmosphere and functionality of the bedroom while respecting the limitations of a rental property.
THE CHALLENGE
The bedroom belonged to a young couple living in a rental apartment in Belgium.
Several elements of the space could not be changed, including the tiled floor and existing furniture. The couple wanted to improve the atmosphere of the room without major renovation or high investment.
The challenge was to create a design concept that would respect these limitations while transforming the overall feeling of the space.
Before renovation

DESIGN STRATEGY
Instead of focusing on replacement, the concept focused on working with what already existed.
Natural materials, calm colors and thoughtful layering were used to soften the existing floor and create a balanced visual foundation.
At the same time, the design explored how different atmospheres could emerge from the same space through changes in materials, contrast and spatial emphasis.
To help the clients visualize possibilities clearly, two complete design directions were developed.
The design also considered the realities of rental living. Tenants often do not know how long they will stay in a property and therefore prefer solutions that do not require high investment.
For this reason, the concept works with flexible and affordable furniture that can be easily assembled, rearranged or replaced over time.
The selected furniture also complements the existing IKEA bed that was already part of the apartment. Choosing compatible pieces helped create a cohesive interior while keeping the investment reasonable.
This approach is particularly practical for rental properties, where the balance between aesthetics, flexibility and budget is essential.
CONCEPT 1 - NATURAL CALM
The first concept focuses on calmness, softness and visual harmony.
Light natural tones, layered textiles and warm materials such as wood and linen create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
The existing elements are integrated into the design and visually softened, allowing the space to feel cohesive and comfortable.
A small alcove becomes a quiet workspace without disturbing the calm character of the bedroom.

CONCEPT 2 - CONTRAST STRATEGY
The second concept embraces contrast and stronger visual identity.
The blackout curtain becomes a defining element that frames the window and introduces depth to the space.
Darker accents create rhythm and structure while maintaining the natural material palette.
The workspace is visually defined with a darker wallpaper, separating it from the sleeping zone and adding focus to the room.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
This project shows how thoughtful interior concepts can transform the perception of a space even when major changes are not possible.
Working within constraints often leads to creative solutions that reveal the hidden potential of a room.
Interior design is not about replacing everything.
It is about understanding the space and revealing its possibilities.
WHY THIS APPROACH WORKS
Concept-based interior design is especially useful for:
• rental apartments
• properties with renovation limitations
• real estate presentation
• remote interior design projects
Clear visual concepts help clients understand the potential of a space and make confident decisions about their interiors.
Online interior design allows clients from different countries to collaborate easily and visualize their future space before making changes.
